MC Construction Wins National Business Award

MC Construction is celebrating victory at a national awards ceremony for its approach to staff training and development.

The Salford-based company, which has 70 staff, won the Commitment to People Development honour at the British Chambers of Commerce’s 2017 Chamber Business Awards.

The judges said MC Construction has shown impressive commitment to the training and development of its staff and added: “They are an outstanding employer and contributor to their local community.”

Managing director David Lowe collected the prize at a gala dinner in London hosted by TV presenter Kate Thornton.

MC Construction was runner-up in the High Growth Business of the Year category.

The company qualified for the national finals after winning the north west heats.

Mr Lowe said: “We’re delighted to be recognised for our commitment to people development with this prestigious award.

“Our staff are at the heart of everything we do and we engage with them at every opportunity. A culture of learning and development is embedded in the business.  We invest a lot in staff training and have a proud record of nurturing our own talent and promoting from within the business.  Five of our seven directors previously held junior positions at the company, and the average length of service overall is more than 10 years.”

All staff have an annual training plan and regular performance reviews. MC Construction runs an extensive apprenticeship programme and holds an annual Family Day at which staff are updated on the company’s success and plans.

Francis Martin, president of the British Chambers of Commerce, said: “MC Construction is a great example of a firm that recognises the importance of investing in staff, nurturing talent and identifying future skills needs. Well-trained workers play a crucial role in achieving and sustaining business growth.

“This award acknowledges their commitment to staff development and is well-deserved.”

The award is the latest accolade for MC Construction, which was crowned SME of the Year at the 2016 North West Regional Construction Awards and won the excellence and best employer prizes at the 2015 Salford Business Awards.

In October this year, Andy Sey was named site manager of the year for the north at the Building Safety Group’s health and safety awards.

In 2014, the company became the first to receive the Salford Mayor’s Charter Mark for employment standards.
